Understanding the ESG Pathway Framework

The ESG Pathway is one of the three core pillars in the SCS Framework. It provides a practical, structured way for organisations to assess how they manage environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance performance.

Whether you're just starting out or aiming for advanced recognition, the ESG Pathway offers a consistent maturity model that supports growth and transparency at every stage.

What the ESG Pathway Covers

The framework is structured around three key domains:

  • Environmental — carbon, energy, waste, water, and resource use

  • Social — health and safety, wellbeing, ethics, and equity

  • Governance — leadership, accountability, transparency, and data

Each domain includes themed areas, broken down into specific assessment questions. These are scored using a simple 0–3 maturity model, supported by clear guidance and evidence expectations.

Progression Through Bronze, Silver, and Gold

As you move through the ESG Pillar levels, the structure remains consistent — but the depth and focus shift:

  • Bronze (ESG Initiator) This entry-level assessment supports organisations starting their ESG journey. It focuses on awareness, basic practices, and early planning — with 29 questions across 12 sub-themes.

  • Silver (ESG Practitioner) At this level, the emphasis moves to structured implementation and operational accountability. It includes 25 questions across 14 sub-themes and expects active management, not just planning.

  • Gold (ESG Leader) Designed for organisations with established ESG systems, the Gold level focuses on performance, impact, and broader supply chain alignment. It includes 27 questions across 12 sub-themes.

Each level builds on the last — helping you mature from understanding to implementation to optimisation.

How Scoring Works

Each question is scored on a standard 0–3 maturity scale:

  • 0 – Not Considered: No action or awareness yet

  • 1 – Defined: Intent is clear and basic processes are in place

  • 2 – Managed: Implementation is underway and being tracked

  • 3 – Optimised: ESG is embedded and continuously improved

This model gives you a consistent way to assess where you are now — and target realistic next steps.

Flexible, Aligned, and Accessible

The ESG Pillar is designed for all sizes of business. You don’t need formal reporting systems in place to begin. The model supports growth from wherever you are and helps build alignment with frameworks such as:

  • GHG Protocol (Scopes 1, 2, and 3)

  • SECR and CSRD

  • ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

  • Modern Slavery and ethical sourcing standards

It also supports broader sustainability conversations with customers, delivery partners, and internal teams.
