This glossary provides quick definitions for key terms used throughout the SCS Knowledge Base, assessment tools, and reports.
It’s designed to help you navigate the framework more confidently — especially if you’re new to maturity models or assessment programmes.

A–Z Glossary
Action Plan
A structured set of activities based on your assessment results, used to close maturity gaps.
Assessment
A structured evaluation process based on maturity questions and evidence, used to determine current capability.
BMA (Baseline Maturity Assessment)
A lightweight, entry-level diagnostic covering all three pillars. Requires no evidence and provides guidance on where to focus.
Bronze / Silver / Gold
The three maturity levels used in SCS certification. Each represents increasing levels of structure, consistency, and embedded practice.
Capability
A business function or theme being assessed for maturity (e.g. leadership, supply chain, data security).
Certification
Formal recognition of an organisation’s maturity level, granted after moderation of a completed assessment.
Criticality Level
The importance assigned to an assessment question — Key, Moderate, or Low Priority — which determines the minimum score needed to pass.
Digital & Cyber Pillar
One of the three technical pillars, focused on digital readiness, system integration, and cybersecurity.
ESG Pillar
One of the three technical pillars, focused on environmental, social, and governance performance.
Evidence
Documents, records, or systems that support your assessment scores and demonstrate actual maturity.
Improvement Pathway
Guidance provided to help organisations move from their current maturity level to the next one.
Key / Moderate / Low-Priority Questions
Scoring categories that define how important a given question is — and what score is required to pass.
Maturity Level
The score given to a question, theme, or pillar — ranging from 0 (Not Considered) to 3 (Optimised).
Moderation
The review process applied to submitted assessments to ensure consistency and accuracy of scoring.
Pillar
One of the core focus areas in the SCS Framework: Competitiveness, ESG, or Digital & Cyber.
Practitioner
A trained professional who supports the delivery and moderation of assessments within the SCS programme.
Recommendation
Bespoke advice given at the end of your report based on assessment outcomes, designed to guide improvement.
Reassessment
The process of completing an updated assessment after a certification cycle, typically to track progress or renew recognition.
Scoring Model
The 0–3 maturity scale used across all pillars to benchmark organisational capability.
Target Score
An optional field in the assessment, used to set a future goal for improvement on a given question or theme.
